Dive Into the multiple applications of Smart Metering solutions

Smart metering is the mapping of energy flows within the railway system to measure the consumption of traction and non-traction systems such as traction substations, depots, and maintenance facilities.

The general principle of Smart Metering is to collect measurements from trains and substations facilitated by gateways to a data management platform.

The data is then processed and analysed in order to feed user applications for operators and Infrastructure Managers.

Use Cases studied

750 V DC Power Flow Analysis

Energy management purpose

This use case targets the energy management topic, for better use of energy within the whole power system: trains and infrastructure.

25 kV AC Railway Interline Power Flow Controller (RIPFC)

Future implementation purpose

This use case addresses power stability and quality purpose of the infrastructure, in the framework of a future implementation.

25 kV AC Railway Network Monitoring

Maintenance purpose

The purpose of this use case maintenance is to support the operators in the decision-making process, providing real-time information.
